Falling temperatures make roads deceptively slippery

Roads may be slippery in many parts of Finland, Yle reports, after several traffic accidents on Friday. Meteorologist Anne Borgström warned that road surfaces can be considerably colder than the air.

At least five accidents were reported in Pirkanmaa during the afternoon. In Kankaanpää, a bus carrying conscripts and a car collided.

Temperatures fell below freezing across almost the entire country overnight into Friday, and light frost is expected again overnight into Saturday. Frost may form in southern and western Finland early on Sunday, even where air temperatures are milder.

Weather temperatures are forecast and measured two metres above the ground, Borgström said, so the road surface can be much colder. Frost-related slipperiness is most likely in western Finland. In the Finnish Lapland arm region, snow or sleet may affect driving conditions.
