Suspicion has focused on Mohamad Thor Jóhannesson, formerly Mohamad Kourani, in connection with bomb threats sent to Icelandic institutions and companies, mbl.is reported, citing RÚV.

Police believe they know the origin of a threat sent to Keflavík Airport on Thursday, but have not identified the person they believe was responsible. Recent threats have also targeted Harpa, a concert hall, and government ministries. Police have assessed the threats as not credible.

Kourani has previous convictions for bomb threats in Iceland. In 2023, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison for several offences, including two bomb threats, assaults and offences against public authorities. In 2024, he received a 14-month sentence for, among other offences, making a bomb threat and attempting to make one.

He was later sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted murder and other offences. The National Court upheld the sentence in February 2025.

Kourani was granted parole last September after serving one-third of the eight-year sentence. He was then escorted to Syria and given a 30-year ban from returning to the Schengen area.

Ómar told RÚV there was no indication that the threat to Keflavík Airport was linked to threats against numerous passenger aircraft in Europe in recent days.
