NATO will conduct research and technical tests at Jökulsárlón lagoon over the next two weeks, mbl.is reported, citing a response from Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs to an inquiry by Morgunblaðið.
The tests are expected to include autonomous systems, underwater equipment, sensors and drone technology. They are intended to prepare for future research in the Arctic under challenging conditions.
NATO’s research and experimentation centre applied to the Nature Conservation Agency for a permit, which was granted with conditions. These include preventing damage to the land, including its vegetation, soil and geological formations.
