Posio seeks national ceramics museum with Oura founders’ support
The Lapland municipality of Posio is seeking to establish a national ceramics museum, with support from local businesses and founders of smart-ring company Oura Health, Yle reports.
The project has a budget of 355,560 euros, and the municipality is seeking funding from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Its first phase would develop the museum concept, survey and catalogue ceramics collections, and curate a virtual museum featuring about 200 objects.
If the foundation approves the application, work on the concept and virtual museum could begin late this year or early next year. Funding for a permanent museum building would be sought separately. The municipality plans to assess possible locations next year, with a site near Pentik, the ceramics company and factory, considered a natural choice.
Posio has a long history as a centre for Finnish ceramics. Pentik was established 55 years ago and has at times employed more than 300 people. The municipality estimates that ceramics-related activity now supports about 100 jobs locally. Posio also has a ceramics programme at its upper secondary school and the Arctic Ceramic Centre, which hosts courses, artist residencies and events.
The long-term aim is to develop the museum into a national institution responsible for Finnish ceramic heritage. That status would require an assessment by the Ministry of Education and Culture and inclusion in the state subsidy system. The decision would depend particularly on the importance of the collection and how it is presented.
