Police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing one person and attempting to stab another outside the Kale shopping centre in Tampere on Tuesday evening, Yle reports.

The first victim was injured and taken to hospital. The second was not physically hurt, although the knife tore their outer clothing.

Two people left the scene after the attacks. Police found them nearby soon afterwards through their own investigative work. One of those detained has since been released.

The suspect is a man born in the 2000s who lives in another municipality. Police suspect him of two attempted manslaughters and plan to ask a court to remand him in custody on Thursday.

Marfa Raipela, the detective chief inspector leading the investigation at the Central Finland Police Department, said police had interviewed the victims and had a good understanding of what happened. Investigators are still working to establish the motive. The suspect and victims did not know one another beforehand.
