Iceland Airwaves opens with concert at Grund care home

Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir opened the Iceland Airwaves music festival with a concert at Grund, a residential and nursing home, mbl.is reported.

Rakel and the band Lón, fronted by Valdimar Guðmundsson, performed nearly 10 songs for residents and guests at the annual opening event. The performances were warmly received, and children from Tjarnarskóli preschool sat at the front and watched.

“It went very well,” said Pétur Þorsteinsson, a youth leader at Grund who took part in the event. He said the opening celebration has been held at the home for more than a decade. One attendee had come 15 times in a row, while others had attended 10 and eight times.

Before the concert, Pétur and Halla joked on stage and pulled faces at the audience, prompting laughter.
