Landsvirkjun board dropped meeting request after reassessing need

Landsvirkjun’s board decided not to seek a new meeting with the finance minister about the company’s communications with his ministry, saying the exchanges were appropriate. mbl.is reported the decision in written answers from board chair Brynja Baldursdóttir.

Former chief executive Hörður Arnarson had requested a meeting. In a letter to Finance Minister Daði Már Kristófersson on October 26, he said the board had opposed holding one despite his repeated requests. Morgunblaðið reported on the letter on November 2.

According to Brynja, the board approved Hörður’s proposal in November 2025 to request a meeting with the minister about how Landsvirkjun and the ministry should communicate. The meeting was scheduled for January 7, with Hörður, Brynja and deputy board chair Berglind Ásgeirsdóttir due to attend.

Shortly before Christmas, the ministry contacted Brynja and said the minister wanted an information meeting with the full board. It proposed holding that meeting first and postponing the meeting with the chief executive. The board agreed, and the minister met with the board on January 6.

The board later reconsidered whether the meeting Hörður had requested was necessary. Brynja said the communications with the ministry were consistent with the state’s ownership policy and did not involve improper interference. The board therefore saw no need for a separate meeting and did not schedule another one.

Brynja’s answers did not say whether Hörður agreed with the decision or when he was informed of it.

In an interview with RÚV on the evening of November 3, Daði Már said the request for a meeting with the board and chief executive had not been followed up, adding that he had been willing to meet. Earlier that day, he told mbl.is that there had been two separate meeting requests, that his schedule had not allowed for a meeting with both the board and chief executive, and that the request was not pursued afterward.

Brynja’s account was that the meeting had been scheduled and postponed at the ministry’s suggestion, after which the board decided not to request a new date.

A dispute between Landsvirkjun and Landsnet was also raised at the minister’s meeting with the board on January 6. Hörður was not present.
