A five-year consultancy contract for the Sundabraut road project and new Hvalfjord tunnels is valued at 150 million euros, or about 20 billion Icelandic krónur, mbl.is reported. The state-owned company Göng og brúa is seeking teams to manage the projects and prepare preliminary designs.
The procurement has been advertised in Iceland and across the European Economic Area. Applications are due by 7 December. The contract could be extended, with a total term of up to 20 years.
Göng og brúa is an operating, financing and ownership company tasked with developing major transport infrastructure in Iceland. Its recently appointed chief executive, Guðmundur Daði Rúnarsson, said the company wanted to move quickly and hoped to bring in teams with strong experience of similar projects.
Rúnarsson said interest from potential bidders had been high since the plans were presented at an open day in Reykjavík in September. He expects Icelandic firms to be part of bidding teams, likely alongside international partners.
The estimated cost of the Sundabraut project and doubling the Hvalfjord tunnels is at least 200 billion krónur, Rúnarsson said, around ten times the cost of the Ölfusá bridge project.
After applications are submitted, Göng og brúa will review them and negotiate with shortlisted teams. Selecting a team could take six to seven months. The chosen team will prepare preliminary design material and tender documents, drawing in part on information held by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. The company hopes to launch the first construction tenders in 2028.
