Iceland’s government has issued a civil protection guide urging people to prepare to meet their basic needs for at least three days, mbl.is reports.

The guide advises households to prepare for power cuts and a loss of heating, keep cash available and store enough food and water for at least three days. It also recommends making a household emergency plan and keeping a printed copy.

Supplies listed include water, canned and dry food, a can opener, blankets, cash, payment cards, passports, medicines and hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, menstrual products, nappies, wet wipes and toilet paper.

For safety, light and power, the guide recommends a first-aid kit, a multi-tool, repair tape, a camping stove or gas grill, a gas canister, candles, fire-starting equipment, a flashlight, batteries, a battery-powered radio, a power bank, chargers and a printed list of important phone numbers.

The amount needed will depend on the number of people in each household and their specific needs. Supplies should be easy to find and access, and checked regularly, the guide says.

More information is available at 3dagar.is. The booklet will be published today on verumvidbuin.is and sent electronically through Ísland.is to everyone aged 18 and over. Landsbjörg will distribute printed copies around the country from Wednesday to Sunday alongside the sale of Neyðarkallinn.
