Scammers exploit MobilePay name change to target users
Scammers are sending emails and text messages pretending to be from MobilePay, prompting a warning from South and Southern Jutland Police, DR reports. The messages falsely claim users need a security update.
The police said in a Facebook post that scammers are taking advantage of the attention around MobilePay’s upcoming name change to try to obtain people’s information.
MobilePay’s parent company told Ekstra Bladet that the name change will not require any security updates. On January 12, MobilePay will become Vipps, but the app will remain the same. Users do not need to update their details or download another app, the company said. Any message asking them to do so is false.
Police advised people not to click suspicious links or share personal information. Messages that demand urgent action, particularly those asking recipients to enter personal details, may be attempts at fraud. Instead, people should go directly to the sender’s website, police said.
