Someone smashes windows in nearly 30 cars in Seltjarnarnes

Nearly 30 cars had their windows smashed overnight in Seltjarnarnes, mbl.is reported Monday, citing Magnús Benediktsson, president of the town council. His car was among those damaged.

Residents found damage along Nesvegur by Austurströnd and on Kirkjubraut, including cars parked by a church. Benediktsson said nothing appeared to have been stolen, and no car alarms had sounded.

Residents initially suspected the break-ins were aimed at stealing valuables, Benediktsson said. When they found nothing was missing, he said, they concluded the damage appeared to have been caused by “an obviously sick individual.”

Benediktsson and his wife have a six-month-old child and rely heavily on their car. He said they had been told it would take three weeks to get a replacement window, and their insurer would not provide a rental car despite their comprehensive coverage.
