Seinäjoki aims to open a visitor centre at its Aalto Centre by summer 2027, after UNESCO recognition brought more attention to the architectural complex, Yle reports.

The Aalto Works collection was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2026. The status was followed by increased visitor numbers at several Aalto sites in late summer, although Seinäjoki has no precise figures because the centre is open, does not charge admission and has no visitor counters.

The planned centre would be located alongside the Aalto library. Seinäjoki city architect Jussi Aittoniemi said preparations had gathered pace since the UNESCO decision, with the centre expected to begin operating in some form next summer. Early plans include a digital, largely self-service facility with an exhibition. It could also serve as an information point and starting place for regional Aalto tourism, including visits to sites in Alajärvi.

Tuula Lahti, chief executive of Seinäjoki Visit Region, said the listing had prompted greater interest in the centre. Marketing professionals say there is still considerable scope to improve how that recognition is used. Seinäjoki has established a management committee and communications and marketing working groups during the autumn.

Requests for guided tours increased among local businesses in late summer and early autumn. Other Aalto Works sites also reported more visitors after the UNESCO decision: participation in guided tours at Paimio Sanatorium doubled in late July and early August compared with the same period last year, while Säynätsalo Town Hall had an unusually busy August, with a clear rise in domestic visitors. At the Church of the Three Crosses in Imatra, visitor numbers rose after the decision but fell again in September.

Seinäjoki plans a survey to gather more detailed information about visitors. The Aalto Centre includes a church, city hall, library, parish centre, government office building, theatre and civic square.
