Police are assessing whether to open a criminal investigation after Makwan Amirkhani’s lawyer Kari Uoti shoved a photographer in court, Yle reported.

Western Uusimaa Police received a report alleging petty assault over an incident at the start of a hearing at Western Uusimaa District Court last Thursday. Police have not begun a preliminary investigation and say nobody is currently suspected of a crime.

Uoti said the photographer had stepped on his foot. The photographer denied touching Uoti, Ilta-Sanomat reported. Police confirmed that the report concerns the shove but have not disclosed who filed it or commented further on the people involved.

Uoti told Yle he was unaware of the report and did not wish to comment.

The court’s presiding judge, Mika Illman, described the shove as highly unusual to Helsingin Sanomat. Journalist Union chair Marjaana Varmavuori also criticised the conduct in the newspaper.

Amirkhani is on trial accused of coercing musician Mira Luoti into a sexual act. The prosecutor is seeking a suspended prison sentence of about 18 months. Amirkhani denies the charge and has asked the court to dismiss it. The trial is due to continue on December 22.
