There is no sign of a labor shortage at Lapin Lennosto (Lapland Air Command), which appears to be a desirable workplace, according to Lieutenant Colonel Petteri Puusa, the command’s chief. The unit hosted an impressive military aviation career event on Thursday in Rovaniemi, attracting hundreds of schoolchildren and local residents.
The event aimed not only to recruit new talent but also to showcase the operations of the air force to the public. Currently, nearly 500 people are employed either permanently or temporarily at Lapin Lennosto, with the introduction of F-35 multi-role fighters creating new opportunities.
Puusa indicated that training is underway for personnel in preparation for the F-35 program, with the first training rotation set to depart for the United States in the fall of next year. Following that, training will continue domestically.
All air force units are actively recruiting for the F-35 project, with varying numbers of vacancies depending on the unit. The impact of the F-35’s arrival is expected to create new roles from 2023 to 2026, with Lapin Lennosto recruiting several dozen employees for the system’s implementation and performance enhancement.
In contrast, the Karjalan Lennosto (Karelia Air Command), which will receive fighters in 2028, is closely monitoring developments in Lapland, while the Satakunnan Multi-role Air Command differs as it houses support aircraft and research departments.
The air force’s recruitment efforts are increasingly targeted at young individuals, with an emphasis on encouraging interest in military aviation careers. While younger recruits are essential, experienced personnel are also needed for specialized roles and civilian positions.
