Iceland, Kjalarnes, road construction

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has signed a contract with Suðurverk hf. and Fossvélar ehf. for the second phase of widening the Ring Road on Kjalarnes, mbl.is reported.

The work covers the road from Vallá to Hvalfjarðarvegur. The tender, advertised across the European Economic Area, received four bids. The winning bid was the lowest, at 4,680,697,303 Icelandic krónur. The other bidders were Íslenskir aðalverktakar hf., Ístak hf. and Borgarverk ehf.

The existing two-lane road will be converted into sections with two-plus-one and two-plus-two lanes, with opposing traffic separated. The project includes two roundabouts, new underpasses at Grundarhverfi and Arnarhamar, and an extension to the existing underpass at Klébergsskóli. It will also add service roads, a rest stop and facilities for weighing vehicles.

Work will include changes to utility-company lines and the installation of road lighting and cables. The project is being carried out in partnership with Reykjavík City, Veitur, Ljósleiðarinn and Míla.

Work is expected to begin in the coming days with ground preparation on part of the roadbed. The project is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2029.
