Lahti’s traditional Christmas opening will not take place this year, but several entrepreneur-led events are planned for November 21. The change follows a decision by downtown development association Lahti City, which did not receive project funding, Yle reports.

Lahti City will help with preparations and practical arrangements rather than organise the event itself. The activities are planned for locations including Lanunaukio square and Rautatienkatu street, with a separate programme at the Trio shopping centre.

Santa Claus is expected to visit at least two events. At a daytime event for children at Lanunaukio, he will arrive by motorcycle with a sidecar filled with Fazer’s Blue chocolate, organiser and entrepreneur Riku Routo said. Santa has also promised to visit the Rautatienkatu event.

The Lanunaukio programme for adults will include music by Lahti rock veterans, archival photographs and stories about the city’s past. The evening will continue with a disco at Lahti Market Hall. Entertainer Mato Valtonen, known from the band Sleepy Sleepers, will give a Christmas speech from a balcony near the market square. “There will definitely be no wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas,” Routo said.

The organisers hope the events will draw people back to the city centre and support local businesses. A city event called the Christmas Trail is also scheduled for November 28.
