Violence erupts at National Festival in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, raising safety concerns

Police and legal issues have arisen following a series of violent incidents at a festival in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. A father expresses deep disappointment with the police response after his son was severely assaulted at the National Festival. Reports have surfaced about at least two young men facing significant and unprovoked physical attacks during the event.

The father, Pétur Hafsteinsson, recounted that his son was brutally beaten in Herjólfsdal, sustaining serious injuries that required immediate attention. After the attack, he and his girlfriend sought help from the police, but were met with the response that there was nothing they could do other than transport them to the medical tent. The police did not take further details or ask them to file a report the following day. In the medical tent, while his son’s wounds were treated, it was deemed unnecessary to transfer him to a hospital, despite symptoms indicating a possible concussion.

Pétur criticized the handling of the situation, arguing that the authorities failed to provide adequate support. In a separate incident just hours later, another 19-year-old was attacked with a glass bottle near the festival’s main stage, requiring significant medical treatment, including numerous stitches. Again, the police were not called at the time of the event.

The mother of the latter victim voiced her frustration over the lack of appropriate care and attention, stating that both festival-goers and their safety should be a priority. Calls for improved safety measures and response protocols have intensified, highlighting a significant concern regarding the handling of such violent incidents at large public gatherings. The cases are now under investigation by the police.
