A landslide has fallen onto a road at Njarðvíkurskriður as heavy rain raises the risk of landslides and rockfalls in the Eastfjords, mbl.is reports.

Iceland’s Meteorological Office says rainfall has been intense in several places, including the Eastfjords and Glettingur in eastern Iceland, indicating that slopes may be unstable.

At Bakkagerði, near Borgarfjörður eystra, 61 millimetres of rain had been recorded since 5am, with further rain forecast. The gottvedur.is weather website urged people to take care, particularly on roads running beneath steep slopes where landslides and rockfalls may occur.
