Autumn illness levels are calmer than in recent years, according to Raija Auvinen, an infectious disease physician at Finland’s Institute for Health and Welfare, Yle reports. Rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, is currently circulating.

The assessment is based on the institute’s infectious disease register. Auvinen said common cold viruses have been reported at typical levels, with some viruses appearing less prevalent than in the past couple of years. Coronavirus and adenovirus cases are down on previous autumns, while mycoplasma and whooping cough have also been uncommon.

Healthcare authorities in North Ostrobothnia and Pirkanmaa report that rhinovirus is currently circulating, which is typical for September and October. The register records laboratory-confirmed cases, but testing practices vary by region and year. Tests are generally performed on patients with severe illness or when results affect treatment.

Influenza activity remains low, with the season usually starting in November or December and continuing into spring. The register has recorded up to about 40 influenza cases a week this autumn. Norovirus occurs mainly in late winter, although smaller numbers of cases are seen at other times of year.
