Yle reports that seven people from Vantaa Prison, including its governor, are due in court over alleged official misconduct linked to a prisoner’s 2022 killing. The trial begins today at the Eastern Uusimaa District Court.

The prison governor and the deputy governor responsible for security are charged with breach of official duty. Five other staff members face charges of breach or negligent breach of official duty. One of them is also charged with assault, treated in this case as an offence by omission: the allegation is that the person failed to prevent the violence, not that they personally attacked anyone. All seven deny the charges.

A man in his twenties was found dead in a six-person transit cell at Vantaa Prison in January 2022. Two inmates in the cell had assaulted and raped him over two days, beating and kicking him, cutting him and pouring hot water over him. One eventually suffocated the victim while the other held him.

In 2023, the Eastern Uusimaa District Court sentenced both inmates to life in prison for murder and aggravated rape. The sentences are final.

The National Bureau of Investigation also examined why the two days of violence went unnoticed by prison staff. The investigation led to the charges now before the court.

The Criminal Sanctions Agency transferred the prison governor and deputy governor to other duties in January 2025 while the investigation was under way. Three other prison officials were suspended from duty indefinitely. The agency has not said what roles the two leaders were moved to.
