Grindavík’s town council is calling for a permanent solution to the high-voltage cable connecting the town with Svartsengi, which currently lies unprotected on lava. The cable was intended as a temporary measure, mbl.is reported, but no permanent replacement is yet in sight.
Mayor Pétur G. Markan said the issue, which is being handled by HS Veitur, should be a priority. A new risk assessment has changed the outlook for the town, he said, and its residents and businesses are expected to grow significantly in the coming period.
“This is one of the most important projects that needs to get under way as the town is rebuilt,” Markan told Morgunblaðið. He said the cable’s future route should be reviewed in light of the town’s growth and that reliable electricity supply was essential to its strong business community, which had endured the disasters of recent years.
Markan also called for a loop connection to improve the town’s electricity security. There are no cost estimates or timetable for bringing a permanent high-voltage cable into operation, he said, but the project should be given priority. With the new risk assessment pointing to more normal conditions, he said, the town could no longer rely on a temporary solution.
