The Faroe Islands should establish a licensed slaughterhouse and improve records of sheep that are slaughtered, official veterinarian Elspa Petersen told KVF.
Petersen works in the food department of the Food and Veterinary Authority and is attending the Nordic conference InterNorden 2026, which is being held in the Faroe Islands. Home-slaughtered sheep meat can currently be sold directly to consumers, shops and restaurants.
She said she was not concerned that a licensed slaughterhouse would erode people’s skills in slaughtering and handling sheep. She believes more could be made of the animals at a slaughterhouse than under the current system.
