About 20 criminal groups, most with strong links abroad, operate in Iceland, and police callouts involving firearms have increased, according to a senior police officer interviewed on mbl.is’s Spursmál programme. Certain groups of immigrants do not hesitate to wave firearms in public, he said.

Karl Steinar Valsson, chief superintendent and head of the National Police Commissioner’s security and analysis division, is interviewed on the programme. It shows photographs of a group of immigrants waving several handguns on streets in the capital region and asks Karl Steinar to comment.

The programme is available to everyone in the player below and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. today.

In a separate segment, former Young Left-Greens chair Illugi Gunnarsson and Júlíus Viggó Ólafsson, head of the Union of Young Independents, discuss the turmoil in Viðreisn’s parliamentary group, protests and unrest in Paris, and other topics.
