The city of Lieksa will take responsibility for the hiking trail and facilities at Reposuo, a protected mire, from the start of 2028, Yle reports. Metsähallitus’ Nature Services will maintain them until the end of 2027, and the city and Metsähallitus will first carry out repairs together.

Next year, more than three kilometres of boardwalks will be repaired along the 12-kilometre Ketunlenkki trail, which circles the mire. Signs and trail markers will also be renewed, and the route will be realigned in the south near a former landfill.

The repairs are expected to cost between 60,000 and 80,000 euros. The trail is an important local recreation area for Lieksa residents, about 10 kilometres from the city centre. An agreement transferring maintenance to the city will last 10 years.

Metsähallitus will continue to maintain the birdwatching tower at Reposuo. Lieksa has previously taken responsibility for hiking services at Änäkäinen, an area known for its military history.

Metsähallitus’ Nature Services has ended maintenance at several hiking destinations in North Karelia. Maintenance of the Kolvananuuro trail in Kontiolahti will end this autumn. Firewood will no longer be delivered to the Koirilampi rest stop, and the area’s boardwalks and stairs will no longer be maintained. Roadside signs directing visitors to the gorge valley will also be removed.
