Construction to redevelop the north side of Hlemmur square will begin in the coming days, mbl.is reports. The work is part of the first phase of Borgarlína, and is expected to finish by the end of 2027.
The project will redesign intersections and the square, and add lanes reserved for public transport and emergency services. Reykjavík City says the aim is to create an inviting, pedestrian-friendly urban space, with more room for people walking and cycling and improved facilities for public transport.
Work will rebuild the junction of Snorrabraut and Hverfisgata, as well as the section of Snorrabraut between Bríetartún and Hverfisgata. The Borgarlína route through the square and a stop will also be developed.
Sewer, water, heating, electricity, telecommunications and traffic-signal infrastructure will be renewed as part of the project. Reykjavík City, Veitur and Betri samgöngur are working together on the infrastructure upgrades.
