Yle reports that a woman in Finland’s Pirkanmaa region has been given a suspended prison sentence for aggravated money laundering after passing on almost 130,000 euros sent to her by six other scam victims.

The woman was herself deceived by someone posing as a Finnish rock singer. Pirkanmaa District Court sentenced her to one year and four months in prison, suspended, and ordered her to pay the other victims more than 100,000 euros in compensation. The ruling is not final.

The contact began on Facebook in March 2025. The woman, a longtime fan of the singer, gradually came to believe she was speaking with him. The scammer claimed to be going through a divorce and asked her to receive sponsorship money, convert it into cryptocurrency and send it on.

The woman told the court she did not know the money came from crimes and had tried to check whether the messages were genuine. The court accepted that she had made inquiries, but found they were not sufficient. It said she should have suspected the money was criminally obtained.

The messages eventually became romantic. The scammer sent photos, videos and voice messages, and said a phone number the woman had looked up belonged to a record company. The person behind the scam was not identified during the police investigation. In other cases, the same approach was used to target fans; one victim believed they were helping singer Eija Kantola.

The court took into account that the woman was also a victim of the scam.
