E. coli bacteria have been detected in drinking water in the town of Siglufjörður, and residents are being advised to boil water before drinking it, mbl.is reports.

The bacteria were found in a sample taken during routine water testing on Wednesday, the Northwest Iceland Health Inspection said. The cause of the contamination is not yet known.

The health inspection, in consultation with the Food Agency, said residents would be informed when repairs to the water supply are complete and water quality has been restored.
