The old Skagfjörðsskálinn hut in Langidalur, a valley in Þórsmörk, has been demolished and replaced by a new building, mbl.is reports. The hut had been a defining part of Þórsmörk’s appearance and of the Iceland Touring Association’s work there for decades.

The building, which had stood in the valley since 1954, was worn out and its timber had decayed. It was demolished a few weeks ago, and the new hut has now been placed on its former foundations.

The new building was made in sections in Selfoss and transported east by trucks, led by a police car with flashing lights. It closely resembles the old hut, making it possible to restore the landscape and the hut’s practical role, mbl.is said.
