A new mountain hut for Ferðafélag Íslands has been transported to Þórsmörk after an overnight journey, mbl.is reports. The building was constructed in sections in Selfoss over the past few months.
The transport set off on Tuesday evening, with trucks carrying the sections east and a police car with flashing lights leading the convoy. The route included crossing glacial rivers. The largest sections measured 92 square metres.
The new hut has been placed on the foundation of Skagfjörðsskáli, the old hut in Langidalur, which dated mainly from 1954. The building had become worn and its timber was rotten, so it was demolished several weeks ago. The new hut was built by SG-hús in Selfoss.
“We have just lowered the last section of the building here in Þórsmörk,” Kristján Ingi Vignisson of Jáverk said. He said careful preparation and the work of many people had helped the transport and installation go smoothly.
