Enontekiö’s municipal council has sent a proposed slogan calling the Lapland municipality “Finland’s Monaco” back for revision after it drew mostly negative feedback, Yle reports.
The council decided on Wednesday, after more than an hour of discussion, to reconsider both the slogan and its accompanying vision. It approved the main content of the municipality’s strategy, which looks ahead to 2031.
Municipal manager Eero Ylitalo said the strategy and slogan were deliberately made more imaginative than those of many other municipalities to draw public interest. He said the strategy should be something residents create together, rather than work produced by a consultant.
The council said residents and stakeholder groups should be consulted as the slogan and vision are prepared again. It also asked officials to consider ways to involve residents in developing new options. One proposal was an open idea competition.
The goal is to find a slogan and vision based on the approved strategy that reflect Enontekiö’s distinctive character, strengths and future goals. The existing slogan had already been revised at village meetings.
Ylitalo said the debate and public engagement were positive, adding that they showed residents cared about Enontekiö and wanted to influence its future.
