A project group appointed by Iceland’s Ministry of Infrastructure has begun work on measures to improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists, mbl.is reported. The measures include better winter maintenance and safer routes, with the aim of implementing as many as possible by the end of 2028.

The group will set priorities, monitor progress and support implementation. Its work is based on proposals from a working group that submitted a draft policy on active travel and small vehicles in June last year. Those proposals also informed the transport plan for 2026 to 2040, which Iceland’s parliament approved this summer.

The planned measures include improvements to transport infrastructure, stronger winter maintenance and more consistent design standards and planning. They also include public education, economic incentives and transport policies at public-sector workplaces.

The initiative aims to improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists, increase access to active travel and encourage greater understanding and respect among different road users. Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir will lead the project group, whose members are Valgerður Gréta Benediktsdóttir, Bryndís Friðriksdóttir, Finnur Ricart Andrason and Gunnar Geir Gunnarsson.
