The Hellisheiði power station marks 20 years since it was formally commissioned on October 21, 2006, mbl.is reports.
Orkuveitan, the parent company of Orka náttúrunnar, built the power station in stages. Electricity production began in 2006, and its heating plant was commissioned in 2010 to produce hot water. Operations became part of Orka náttúrunnar when the company began operating in 2014.
The station now has an installed capacity of 303 megawatts, and its electricity is used by homes and businesses across Iceland. It can produce 950 litres of hot water per second. According to a company announcement, that capacity is expected to reach 1,500 litres per second after the new year.
“For twenty years, Hellisheiði power station has been an important foundation for quality of life and value creation in Iceland,” said Árni Hrannar Haraldsson, managing director of Orka náttúrunnar. He said the company is working to increase hot-water production to meet future needs, and that such development requires long-term planning.
Orka náttúrunnar will hold an open house at the power station on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to mark the anniversary.
