Suðurnesjabær wants underpasses rather than bridges where Reykjanesbraut is set to be widened, according to mbl.is. The road will be expanded from Njarðvík to a roundabout on Miðnesheiði, the heath leading to Keflavík Airport.

The municipality’s planning and works committee has submitted comments on the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s environmental assessment report. It also wants height limits on the road to avoid restricting heavy transport.

The 4.7-kilometre stretch is planned to become a four-lane road, with two lanes in each direction and a central barrier. Construction is scheduled for 2029 to 2033, with four billion Icelandic krónur allocated to the project.

Plans also require changes to municipal and detailed planning, and consideration of possible future rail links between the airport and the capital region. Remains from the period when foreign forces were stationed in Iceland are among the heritage features in the road’s impact zone.

The Road and Coastal Administration says the project aims to improve traffic flow on Reykjanesbraut and have a positive effect on the community.
