Icelandair used a Boeing 757 on domestic routes on Monday after severe weekend weather disrupted flights, mbl.is reports. The aircraft landed and took off twice at Reykjavík Airport, flying return trips between Reykjavík and Akureyri and between the capital and Egilsstaðir.
The airline cancelled 13 domestic flights between Reykjavík and Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Höfn in Hornafjörður, and back, because of the weather. Icelandair spokesman Guðni Sigurðsson told mbl.is that increased demand prompted the use of the larger aircraft. He said the airline sometimes takes this step when domestic flights are disrupted.
Isavia said in response to an mbl.is inquiry that 35 flights were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday. The total also included flights to Vopnafjörður, Þórshöfn, Grímsey, Bíldudalur and Ísafjörður, as well as a service between Qarqortoq in Greenland and Reykjavík.
