A jeep owned by Helga Lúðvíksdóttir and Sigurður Jóhannsson was badly damaged when a roof sheet struck it during last week’s storm in Siglufjörður, mbl.is reports.

An assessor estimated repairs at about 800,000 krónur. The vehicle is not covered by comprehensive insurance, and insurance for the building from which the sheet blew did not cover the damage, leaving Helga to pay the full bill herself.

The 1999 Land Cruiser has scratches on its bonnet, front bumper and both sides, as well as a slight dent on the right side and a damaged wing mirror. Helga had recently had it repainted and rust-proofed. She said she had owned it for years, sold it and later bought it back and had it restored.

“I was very upset about this, but that’s life; it has its ups and downs,” she said. “The main thing is that nobody was injured. That is number one, two and three for me.”

The couple saw the damage from inside their home on Túngata, but waited until later in the day to go outside because of the risk from flying roof sheets and other debris. Their Toyota Avensis, parked behind the jeep, escaped with one dent. A third car was in the garage, which sustained some dents.

Helga said the house shook in the gusts and that the storm was the worst she had seen in Siglufjörður since moving there in 1977.
