A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Bárðarbunga, a volcano beneath the Vatnajökull glacier, at 2:44 p.m. on Monday, mbl.is reported, citing preliminary measurements from the Icelandic Met Office.
Several aftershocks followed, most below magnitude 2. Several other earthquakes were recorded earlier in the day, the largest measuring 3.0.
The last major earthquake at Bárðarbunga was recorded on October 5 and measured 4.7. A magnitude 5.2 quake struck on July 28.
Earthquakes of this kind have occurred regularly in recent years and are linked to magma accumulating beneath Bárðarbunga after the 2014–2015 Holuhraun eruption. There are no signs of volcanic tremor.
