Storm shatters six windows at Siglufjörður workshop

Monday 19th October 2026 on 15:31 in Iceland

Siglufjörður, storm damage, weather

A severe storm broke six windows and nearly blew down a large garage door at the Bás car repair workshop in Siglufjörður last week, mbl.is reported. No one was injured.

In one gust, the top of the door buckled about a metre inward. Workshop staff managed to drive a large machine against it and secure it before it moved further, said Magnús Tómasson, one of the workshop’s owners.

A window in the staff room, on the building’s east side, was the only one to break inside. Glass scattered across the room, but nobody was there at the time. Two windows on the west side broke as the door was pushed inward. Staff watched other windows being sucked out by the gusts while they worked inside the building.

The storm began at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday and lasted until around 12:30 p.m. Five employees were initially at the workshop, with two more arriving from another company location to help cover the broken windows with plywood supplied by a local contractor.

Magnús said there was no time to be afraid as staff focused on closing the openings. The workshop was closed for the rest of the day while employees cleaned up the broken glass. A contractor secured the exterior the following day.

Magnús, who was born and raised in Siglufjörður, said he had never experienced gusts like those in his six years running the business, and that storm damage had never broken windows at the workshop before.
