Police received several child welfare reports after intervening in disorder involving young people in Lappeenranta, Yle reports. Between 100 and 150 youths gathered near the Kimpinen school complex over the weekend.

On Friday evening, police deployed several patrols to the area, where some young people were setting off fireworks and some minors appeared to be intoxicated. Police detained and fined four youths for offences including possession of fireworks or alcohol, and contacted their parents to collect them.

Police also issued several written cautions and told the group to behave more appropriately. The police operation helped calm things down on Saturday evening, when officers saw some fireworks and laser lights but said the youths’ behaviour had improved.

South Karelia’s wellbeing services county confirmed it had received a few reports concerning minors’ use of intoxicants and fireworks. After a report, social services may invite a young person and their family to a meeting. Some cases lead to child welfare services, while others are referred to more suitable support. Reports are assessed within seven working days, depending on their contents.

Police say they will continue monitoring in Lappeenranta. The city has also announced plans to increase camera surveillance in the centre.
