Staff at Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, a swimming pool in Reykjavík, rescued a man who sank to the bottom of the pool on Sunday, mbl.is reported. The man regained consciousness at the scene and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Steinþór Einarsson, head of Reykjavík City’s culture and sports department, told mbl.is that staff noticed the man was no longer making progress as he swam and had gone under. They immediately pulled him to safety, gave first aid and called for help. An ambulance arrived four to five minutes later.

Staff later heard that the man was speaking and appeared to be in good health. Paramedics returned to the pool to thank staff for their prompt response, which Steinþór said had played a significant role in the outcome.

He said staff followed all procedures and activated the emergency response plan. The pool closed for the rest of the day, and staff were offered trauma support. It has since returned to normal operations. Vísir was the first to report the incident.
