Rescue teams retrieve driver stranded in Skagafjörður
A driver became stranded on the southern edge of the Icelandic highlands in Skagafjörður on Sunday evening after the car got stuck and a tyre came off its rim, mbl.is reported.
Skagfirðingasveit, a rescue team based in Sauðárkrókur, and Flugbjörgunarsveitin, a rescue team in Varmahlíð, responded and brought the driver to safety. The car had to be left behind.
Jón Þór Víglundsson, a spokesperson for the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, said the damaged tyre could not be put back on, so more would have been needed to get the car moving.
A yellow weather warning was in force in the Westfjords and Northwest Iceland until 1 a.m. Landslide warnings were also in effect because of rain and melting snow.
