The Ring Road has been closed between the Almannaskarð tunnel and Djúpivogur because of strong winds and blowing sand, mbl.is reported. The closure will remain in place until the weather eases and road conditions improve, according to umferdin.is.
Weather conditions are poor in the Eastfjords, with southwesterly winds forecast at 15 to 23 metres per second. Gusts near mountains could exceed 30 metres per second. Rain is also expected, and blowing sand could sharply reduce visibility and make driving dangerous.
Strong winds are forecast in other parts of the country as well. The Icelandic Meteorological Office expects southerly and southwesterly winds to strengthen, reaching 18 to 23 metres per second in many areas later in the day. Yellow weather warnings are in effect in several regions, with rain or showers expected, particularly in the south and west. Temperatures are forecast to range from 6 to 12 degrees.
Winds are expected to ease gradually tomorrow, although wet weather will continue in many parts of the country. Drivers are urged to follow road closures, stay off closed roads and check the latest road and weather information before setting out.
