Stora Enso received about 5,000 cubic metres of sawlogs and pulpwood from logging at Google data centre construction sites in Kajaani and Muhos, the company told Yle, reversing its earlier position that it had no connection to the logging.
The timber was delivered to Stora Enso’s Oulu business unit by a supplier whose contract with the company ended in May 2026. Stora Enso said it had received new information about the deliveries on Saturday.
The company said it had no direct timber trade, logging or transport contracts with Google for the sites. It requires its suppliers to ensure that timber is legal and meets its requirements for origin and responsibility. Stora Enso said it is monitoring the case and will follow instructions from the authorities.
The Permits and Supervisory Authority suspects that the logging may have broken the law. It urged Google in early October to suspend work at the construction sites in Kajaani and Muhos. The timber could be barred from use.
UPM Metsä and Metsä Group have also said they received small quantities of timber from the same areas through delivery partners. Both have suspended deliveries while they investigate.
FSC Finland’s director, Anna Ylä-Anttila, told Yle that illegally logged timber cannot be brought into the FSC system or mixed with certified production. The PEFC forest certification organisation said it is actively investigating the events in Kajaani and Muhos.
