Rescue team Klakkur has been called out to secure roof panels coming loose from a sports hall in Grundarfjörður as a storm hits Breiðafjörður, mbl.is reports.
Jón Þór Víglundsson, information officer for the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, said the rescue crews had recently arrived and were working to secure the roof in difficult conditions. He said it was hazardous to go up onto the roof and that safety was paramount.
Work had been under way on the building’s exterior cladding, and a contractor had been at the scene shortly before the incident to assess conditions.
A yellow weather warning took effect in Breiðafjörður at 11 a.m. and an orange warning is due to replace it this afternoon. Wind gusts of up to 45 metres per second are expected. The weather is forecast to worsen as the day progresses.
A meteorologist told mbl.is earlier that conditions were not expected to be as severe as earlier in the week, when roof panels blew off a house in Siglufjörður and into another building. Residents have been urged to secure loose objects, and people have been warned against travelling in the area, where roads could close at short notice.
