Struer Municipality is expanding a successful phone-check programme for people over 67 who live alone or feel lonely, DR reports.

In a pilot on Thyholm and Jegindø, 130 residents accepted the offer of a telephone conversation about their health and wellbeing. The calls aim to identify possible health or wellbeing concerns before they develop. Municipal health consultants can offer advice and arrange follow-up calls or home visits where needed.

One call proved valuable for pensioner Margrethe Tøstesen, who lives in Hvidbjerg on Thyholm, in the northern part of the municipality. Health consultant Betina Noe called to ask how she was doing.

“You’re not exactly used to getting a call from the municipality,” Tøstesen said.

Tøstesen has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and struggles with her breathing. After the call, she received a special PEP breathing device, which the article says helps her take up oxygen more effectively and become less short of breath.

Noe said the calls can help older residents who may be vulnerable, particularly those living alone. Some people attribute changes in their health to ageing, she said, although that is not necessarily the cause.

Following the positive results, the municipality is extending the programme to Gimsing Parish and Resen Parish. Older residents can also contact the municipal health centre themselves, Noe said.
