Drilling for the tunnel to Tjørnuvík will not begin until late 2027 or early 2028, KVF reports.

Jacob Vestergaard, a minister, gave the timeline in a response to MP Sirið Stenberg. Work will first prepare the tunnel entrance at Marmarskallará in Vík, including excavation and blasting, before moving north to Tjørnuvík.

The road from the bridge at Streymin to the tunnel will also need to be widened. The plan is to use rock excavated from the tunnel for the work.

The 2.3-kilometre tunnel is included in the proposed 2027 budget with an allocation of 22.2 million kroner. Landsverk recommends allocating 30 million kroner in 2028 and at least 35 million kroner annually after that. The project also includes 100 metres of road in Tjørnuvík and a few metres in Vík.
