Two foreign tourists visiting Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir in a rental car could see their costs rise by 246% if the government’s planned nature and infrastructure fee is introduced, according to an analysis by Deloitte for the Icelandic Travel Industry Association, reported by mbl.is.

The pair currently pay a combined 3,249 krónur in parking fees at the three attractions. With the proposed fee, their total could reach 11,249 krónur during the summer, an increase of 8,000 krónur.

Draft proposals would charge foreign visitors 4,500 krónur per person in summer and 3,000 krónur in winter for access to all three attractions. The fee would cover the locations collectively rather than being charged separately at each one.

Parking charges at Þingvellir would be scrapped, but fees would remain at Gullfoss and Geysir because their car parks are privately operated. Visitors would continue to pay those parking fees in addition to the new charge.

Deloitte’s analysis also estimates that the direct cost for two tourists on an organised Golden Circle day trip could rise by 38% to 45% if the fee is included in the tour price.

The government plans to introduce the charge on May 1 next year. The Icelandic Travel Industry Association opposes the proposal, saying it could weaken the competitiveness of Iceland’s tourism industry.
