ADHD medication is being sold for 300 kroner a tablet on the Faroese drug market, police say, according to KVF. The medication, referred to in the report as Retalin, is also used recreationally.

Between five and six times as much ADHD medication is prescribed today as 10 years ago. KVF says the increase is partly due to more people being assessed for ADHD and receiving diagnoses that make them eligible for medication.

“It is very common for us to find this kind of medication alongside other drugs that we seize,” said Heri Andreassen, deputy police superintendent in the police investigation department.

Family doctors’ association chair Turið Holm Johannesen said it is very difficult to prevent prescription medication from being used for purposes other than those for which it is intended.

Leivur Haldórsson, who uses Retalin recreationally, features in the programme Leivur vil liva, which follows his life and substance use. The programme also shows Herbergið, a shelter where he lives. Its manager, Martin Kúrberg, said viewers should see the reality faced by some people in society.
