Viðreisn MPs have expressed regret after Jón Gnarr left the party’s parliamentary group, mbl.is reports. Speaker of Parliament Bryndís Haraldsdóttir announced his departure at the start of Thursday’s parliamentary session.

Jón will remain in Parliament as an independent MP and continue to support the government.

Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson, who has worked with Jón in the parliamentary group since they were elected in 2024, said their friendship and cooperation went back further. They first got to know each other when Jón was mayor of Reykjavík and Eiríkur was mayor of Akureyri.

“We have had a very good working relationship for a long time, and that will continue. It has always been very good to work with Jón. He is truly unique,” Eiríkur told mbl.is.

Jón served as Reykjavík mayor from 2010 to 2014, while Eiríkur was mayor of Akureyri from 2010 to 2018. They also serve together on Parliament’s Constitutional and Supervisory Committee.
