Iceland, Siglufjörður, storm damage

A roof panel torn from a nearby industrial building pierced a couple’s wooden house in Siglufjörður during a storm, causing extensive damage, mbl.is reported.

Ásta Gunna Kristjánsdóttir and Steinarr Steinarrsson drove to the town on Thursday after a friend told them the previous day that their house at Túngata 29 had been damaged. The couple live in Hafnarfjörður and stay in Siglufjörður regularly, usually once a month.

“My first thought was that the house was ruined. There is quite a mess here. I would not have believed a roof panel could cause this much damage. If anyone had been inside, they would not have survived,” Ásta told mbl.is.

The roughly 100-square-metre house has extensive damage. The couple’s bed was smashed, the doorway to the bedroom is badly distorted, the kitchen sink has shifted and cabinets are scattered across the floor. A window is also broken.

A rescue team came to the house on Wednesday and secured it to stop more water from getting in. “There is snow in the bed,” Ásta said.

She said one wall was certainly destroyed and she believed the house’s supporting structure may have shifted. Ásta said she was grateful no one had been injured.
