Aalborg, DNA investigation, police

North Jutland Police may use genetic genealogy to examine an unsolved rape case in Aalborg from October 2023, DR reports. The case is among those the force will screen as it reviews 15 years of unsolved rape cases.

Police shared images of a suspected perpetrator at the time, but the person was never found. Acting Deputy Police Inspector Mikkel Lousdal said investigators would assess whether there is a basis for using the new DNA technique in the case.

Genetic genealogy involves comparing DNA from an unknown perpetrator with DNA from other people in the police’s central register. If close relatives of the perpetrator are in the register, investigators may be able to identify them, Lousdal said.

The method has also been used to solve the 34-year-old murder of Hanne With in Copenhagen.
